HGTV - Fixer Upper Day

It’s going to be a HGTV kind of day as we head out on a locally guided Fixer Upper Adventure. Our morning will include visiting or sightseeing JDH Iron Design, Harp Design, Earle-Harrison House, Fixer Upper Homes (drive by only) and other sights related to the Fixer Upper show.  Fans of HGTV’s Fixer Upper know that Chip and Joanna Gaines recently undertook their biggest rehab project ever in acquiring a sprawling downtown Waco property that included two huge grain silos and a 20,000-square-foot barn. More than a year in the making, the new complex had its grand opening in 2015!  Pictures can’t quite do the Magnolia Market justice, because it’s so large.  The Magnolia Market is a place to look and buy items, a community center, an expression of Gaines family values and a sort-of shrine to their lifestyle.  The architectural finishes and design flourishes both inside and outside are super nice and well thought-out. Even the restrooms are elegant, with heavy black wooden doors, striking black-and-white tile floors, white subway-tile walls and framed illustrations taken from circa-1800’s copies of Vanity Fair, like the Duke of Northumberland, a dashing old man in a top hat.  Breakfast at Magnolia Table - Chip & Joanna Gaines restaurant that opened in February 2018 in the former historic Elite Café.

Cowboys, Indians, Oil Barons & the Wild West

We’ll visit Woolaroc, the country estate of oil baronFrank Phillips, founder of Phillips Petroleum Company. Woolaroc got its name from the woods, lakes and rocks that are indigenous to the area.  This rustic environment served as a one-of-a-kind entertainment venue. 'Uncle Frank' hosted U.S. Presidents, well known business titans, dignitaries, Indians, movie stars, lawmen and outlaws alike on his sprawling ranch southwest of Bartlesville.  Will Rogers said, 'Of all the places in the United States, Woolaroc is the most unique.'  We’ll tour the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The hour-long Signature Tour gleans the surface of the Museum’s many permanent collections. From Albert Bierstadt’s glowing landscape, Emigrants Crossing the Plains, and works by Remington and Russell, to Native American art, see some of the finest Western art in the country. View ethnographic material from Native Americans to mountain men and learn about frontier military life.  Round out the tour with a look at the evolution of the working cowboy to their portrayal in film and pop culture. Walk away with a better understanding of the diverse cultures that shaped the West.  We’ll visit Karg Art Glass where you can see hand-blown art glass in a picturesque cedar and stone building in the heart of Kechi. Browse through the gift gallery and find unique wonderful gifts in all mediums.  Next, we’ll stop at Walking in Two Worlds: Blackbear Bosin and the Keeper of the Plains.  Discover the history of the Plains Indians through their culture, art, music and food at the Mid-America All-Indian Center. Then, learn about the amazing legacy of Blackbear Bosin, from the Comanche-Kiowa tribe who united the community and left a lasting legacy with his iconic Keeper of the Plains monument. In this behind the scenes premier event, we relate that story to the greater story of the American Indians in Wichita and the adaption and evolution of art, music, food and culture. This is a story of creativity, working together as a community, and  the drive to make our marks on the world. Experience Wichita like it’s 1865 at Cowtown. Old Cowtown is a living history museum that lets you immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and activities common to a Midwestern cattle town. Hear the ring of the blacksmith anvil, try an ice-cold sarsaparilla in the saloon and be prepared to duck in the doorway as gunfire erupts in the streets!  Next is Dinner and Entertainment at the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper.  From their humble beginnings at the outdoor stage at the Prairie Rose 19 years ago, the Diamond W Wranglers have taken their cowboy music to the world. They have performed in Nashville, Carnegie Hall, and even China.  Join them as they visit their roots.  The evening includes the all-you-can-eat chuckwagon supper, a horse-drawn wagon ride or watch a classic cowboy movie.  We’ll depart on a guided tour of the City of Leavenworth, Kansas.  Points of interest include Fred Harvey’s Home, Carroll Mansion, Buffalo Bill Cody, numerous other historic homes, the renovated 1888 Union Depot, Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” Chapel and drive-by the “Big House” which is the United States Federal Penitentiary.   Step back in time to the late 1800’s where Fred Harvey helped tame the West with his train depot restaurants. Enjoy lunch served by ladies dressed as the “Harvey Girls” in the restored 1888 Union Depot.  Visit the Patee House and Jesse James Home.  Step back in time! The World Hotel was the headquarters for the Pony Express in 1860 and was the finest hotel west of the Mississippi. Today, it offers a “hands on” look at St. Joseph’s colorful history. Stroll down Old Main Street, climb aboard a steam engine and visit the little house where Jesse James was shot and killed by fellow gang member Bob Ford, all to collect a $10,000 reward. Visit the Pony Express National Museum. Mount up and head to the “Stables.” The famous mail delivery service started within these very walls on April 3, 1860. Your guide will give a  personalized tour of exhibits covering the creation, running and demise of the Pony Express.
