Autumn in the Allegheny National Forest

Crisp cool nights and boundless opportunities for sightseeing make the Allegheny National Forest a beautiful place to be in the fall. There are over 513,000 acres of hardwood forests brushed with the colors of scarlet, sunshine yellow and brilliant orange.  At elevations of over 2,000 feet, the prime “leaf peeping” time is normally the last two weeks of September and the first two weeks of October.  The Longhouse National Scenic Byway circles the Kinzua Creek arm of the Allegheny Reservoir through some of the most beautiful scenery on the Allegheny National Forest. A Park Ranger joins us as we explore this 27-mile loop around the reservoir which was selected by USA TODAY as one of the top 50 scenic drives in America.  We’ll stop at a couple different scenic overlooks which offer stunning vistas of the Allegheny Reservoir.  We’ll travel the scenic Route 6 Loop to enter the Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway which leads to the Kinzua SkyWalk at the Kinzua Bridge State Park. This byway winds through the state game lands, forest conservation areas and wet lands.  You have a very good chance of spotting wild turkeys, deer or other wildlife along this byway.  For stunning views of the Kinzua Gorge, take a walk on the Kinzua SkyWalk which extends over 600 feet out into the gorge and provides a stunning view area through its partial glass floor of the tree tops below and an 8-mile vista of the gorge from this scenic overlook.

Allegheny Sights

The Marilyn Horne Museum showcases highlights from the personal archive of legendary opera singer, Marilyn Horne, America’s Grand Dame of operatic stage. Collection highlights include costumes, interactive audio and visual exhibits, and a documentary film shown in a sumptuous theater designed to evoke the ambience of Venice’s famed Teatro la Fenice.  We also have a private dinner included at the museum.  Enjoy your dinner while listening to a backdrop of classical music.  We’ll explore two classic American Icons - Zippo Lighters and Case Knives.  The Zippo/Case Museum features world-class interactive exhibits, an extraordinary 7’x11’ American flag comprised of 3,393 red, white and blue lighters, and the famous Zippo Repair Clinic where the Zippo lifetime guarantee is fulfilled.  At the Penn Brad Oil Museum, we’ll hear the “wild Catting Tales” at the site of our 72 foot tall, 1890 Era Standard Rig.  This is the World’s first billion dollar oil field.  In 1881, the Bradford Oil Field produced an incredible 83% of the United States total oil output.  At the John Williams Pastry Shop we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch and kitchen demo with Chef Joe Frombach.  You can see, touch and feel history at the Eldred World War II Museum.  This museum houses world-class interactive exhibits and artifacts from around the world.  Highlights include a M255 tank, a working submarine periscope, the Gallery of Valor, jeep exhibit and tank mountain.  While we are at the Kinzua Skywalk Visitor Center, we will enjoy a wildlife presentation by Bwana Jim.  Bwana Jim has a rare gift for handling animals and shares his knowledge in an incredibly fun and entertaining way.  You will love this enthusiastic, educational and witty show.  Another show experience is the Enchante Cabaret at the Beefeaters Restaurant which is housed in a former Carnegie Library.  This will be a fun evening of local entertainment.  You will also learn about the maple sugaring history with a short introduction before dinner at Sprague’s Maple Farm & Restaurant

Jamestown, NY

We’ll make a stop at the Lucy-Desi Museum in Jamestown, NY.  The legacy of Lucille Ball has been proudly honored right here in Lucky’s hometown. For decades, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz played a vital role in television and on the big screen, and we’re fortunate to have the privilege of preserving their memory and the impact they’ve both had on the world through all of the fun costumes and memorabilia on display, awards they were both given, photographs of both their personal and TV lives, and much more!  Before departing Jamestown, enjoy a scenic luncheon cruise aboard the Summer Wind Yacht on Lake Chautauqua.
