Door County

State parks, roadside stands, and wineries keep visitors coming back to the famed Door County peninsula. With 300 miles of shoreline, thousands of acres of orchards, several local wines and brews, and 19 unique communities, Door County has something for everyone.  This relaxed pace weekend getaway is just what you need to rest and relax with friends or family.

Wine Trail - Cheers!

The Door County Wine Trail is nestled between Lake Michigan and the Bay of Green Bay, depicting the beauty of Door County and the charm of its small towns.  Well-known for producting fruit wines, especially cherry and apple; the Door County peninsula now includes acres of established cold-hardy vineyards with many of the wineries producing estate-grown grape wines.  Each day on this tour we will take in some of the wineries on this trail.  We will start with the Red Oak Vineyard where you can taste wine while viewing the wine making process.  They have a large variety of wine to please every palate.  Red Oak practices quality wine making processes that include a French style of wine making for reds to a German style for whites and fruit wines.  Next, is Door 44 where their mission is to create world-class quality wines, made from grapes grown here in their own vineyard.  They offer a wide selection of award-winning wines that expresses the different types of fruit-forward wines.  We’ll make a stop at Door County’s largest winery, the Door Peninsula Winery, where you will be able to taste from over 50 traditional grape wines, fruit wines and hard ciders while learning about this 45 year old business and its building, originally a schoolhouse from 1868.  At the Lautenbach’s Orchard Winery you’ll discover 100 acres of fruit-laden orchards and vineyards.  Enjoy the tastes of their labor with some samples!  You have to love the Harbor Ridge Winery motto - “Solving the world’s problems one sip at a time.”  They offer a diverse selection of over 20 different award-winning wines and of course, we are going to enjoy sipping some samples here.  Just 2,500 miles northeast of Napa Valley you’ll find Stone’s Throw Winery where they use Micro-Vinification to produce their wines. We will learn about that process while enjoying some samples!  Our final winery is Wisconsin’s oldest licensed winery, the Von Stiehl Winery, where they have 30 plus grape and fruit wines all housed in a Civil War-era building listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Enjoy the view of Lake Michigan and some samples!

Sights

Board the Fred A. Busse Fireboat for a cruise of Sturgeon Bay.   The cruises are fun with games and prizes as well as a chance to shoot a genuine fire hose.  It is a narrated tour which will inclue views of Bayship Building and various other landmarks and lighthouses.  Enjoy an evening learning about the doomed of Door County.  On this ghost tour of Door county we’ll hear tales of ghostly sunken ships, haunted lighthouses and mysterious happenings on the darker side of this spirited peninsula.  This evening will be scary, fun and informative and is a sightseeing tour that is truly one of a kind.  We’ll take a narrated riding tour of Peninsula State Park, a 3,776-acre WisconsinState Park with eight miles of Green Bay Shoreline.  This is the 3rd largest state park in Wisconsin and is visited by an estimated 1 million visitors annually.  Enjoy the view from the edge of Sven’s Bluff, a steep cliff that is a popular overlook spot in the beautiful Peninsula State Park.  We’ll also tour Cave Point County Park, best known for its underwater caves and wave-worn limestone cliffs.

Rowleys Bay Resort

The Rowleys Bay Resort is a down-to-earth waterfront resort having an indoor pool, fitness room or if you would like to indulge in an adult beverage, the retro-inspired pub offers unique vacation drinks and cocktails, along with a selection of beer and wine, all at prices you won’t believe.  Enjoy your beverage inside or outside on their veranda. Rowleys Bay Resort, dating from 1948, is the largest in northern Door County, and boasts a full service restaurant, cozy pub, Swedish bakery, indoor pool and all the amenities you expect. It sits on 700 feet of wild Lake Michigan waterfront, amidst a hundred acres of woods.  Enjoy a traditional Door County Fish Boil.  Rowleys Bay has taken the iconic local tradition to a new level, with an entertaining actor who plays the part of the namesake of the bay, Peter Rowley.  Sitting lakeside around a hot fire with a boiling cauldron of water, “Peter” tells the colorful story of the bay from the early days of the Potawatomi up to the present.  If you do not care for fish, no problem, there is chicken, meatballs, various side dishes and a 14-foot salad, bakery and dessert bar! We will also enjoy S'mores & Mores around a campfire on our last night (weather permitting).

Supper Club Experience

From relish trays to brandy Old Fashioneds, Wisconsin supper clubs offer a unique dining experience.  Supper Clubs became popular during the 1930s and 1940s, although some establishments that later became supper clubs had previously gained notoriety as a prohibition roadhouse.  The Wisconsin supper club is something so unique to its region of the U.S. that someone really needed to make a movie about it.  The documentary, “Old Fashioned” tells the history of the Badger state institution, the importance of the bar and what you’ll find on a relish tray.  We will be dining at a Supper Club in Egg Harbor and a cocktail is included.  It wouldn’t be a traditional supper club experience without a cocktail!
