If you’re looking for great displays of neon signs, mom-and-pop motels in the middle of nowhere, or kitschy Americana, do as the song says and “get your kicks on Route 66.” The romance of Route 66 continues to captivate people around the world.


Unique Attractions

The Old Joliet Prison opened in 1858 and is where the movie The Blues Brothers and TV show Prison Break were filmed.  They just recently opened their doors for guided tours.  The Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet opened the same year that Route 66 was commissioned: 1926.  It was designed and operated as a vaudeville movie house and is considered one of the 10 most beautiful theatres in the US and they have one of the world’s largest crystal chandeliers called the Duchess. The Pontiac-Oakland Museum features antique and classic cars and lots of automotive artifacts.  The Route 66 Museum is located in the old Pontiac fire station where you will learn the history of Route 66 in Illinois.The Museum of the Gilding Arts shows the history and craft of using gold leaf in architecture and decoration throughout history.  Visit the McLean County Museum of History which was built in 1903 and served as the county courthouse.  It is now a museum and features a Cruisin’ with Lincoln on 66 Visitors Center.  The Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet opened in 2001 and has a 1.5 mile oval track used for NASCAR.  The Route 66 Raceway in Joliet has a 1/4 mile dragstrip and holds 20,000 people in the grandstand.  You’ll visit both on this tour.


Fun Dining

Lunch is included at Merichka’s which opened in 1933 and is just off of Route 66.  Best known for their famous yodel burger and “poorboy” sandwiches.  The Old Log Cabin

Restaurant opened in 1926 and still offers delicious home-cooked meals.  The Palms Grill Café – Atlanta, IL was first opened in 1934 and has been restored and offers great blue plate specials and homemade pie.  Haydens Crossing in Wilmington has an interior which is uniquely decorated with reclaimed barn wood from local donors.


Roadside Attractions

You’ll see some of the unique Roadside Attractions that are infamous along Route 66.  See the giant Paul Bunyan Statue in Atlanta, IL.  We’ll stop at Ambler’s Texaco Gas Station, the longest operating gas station along Route 66 which dispensed fuel for 66 continuous years until 1999.  The Two-Cell Jail was built in 1906 and closed in the 1950’s.  The Gemini Giant in Wilmington is a 30’ tall “Muffler Man” statue that was used for advertising props throughout the US in the 1960’s.  Stop and see the Old Clock Tower where they still hand wind the clock.  We’ll drive around Pontiac, Illinois to see the 23 outdoor murals which depict its local commercial, cultural and political history.

- Check-in to the Hampton Inn Pontiac

- Riding tour of the Murals on Main Street in Pontiac, IL
- Dinner at Bernardi’s II Pontiac

- Stop at the Ambler’s Beck Texaco Gas Station
- Visit the Two Cell Jail
- See the old Street Car Diner
- Lunch at Haydens Crossing
- Photo Stop at the Gemini Giant
- Tour the Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway
- Return to Wisconsin
