Idaho draws - and awes - hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Join us on our NEW tour to explore Idaho!
We'll fly into Spokane and board a motorcoach for a short ride to Coeur d'Alene. The Coeur d'Alene area is surrounded by dozens of lakes left behind by the glaciers of the ice age. There are more than 55 lakes within easy driving distance of Coeur d'Alene, but none more scenic and full of activities than Lake Coeur d'Alene itself. There's something magical about Lake Coeur d'Alene that's hard to define, but it begins with the spectacular North Idaho sunsets and moonrises, the plunge of an osprey after a fish, the glowing lights of downtown Coeur d'Alene reflecting across the waters at night. We'll check into the luxurious and beautiful Coeur d'Alene Resort and enjoy a two-hour sunset cruise complete with a delicious dinner buffet featuring Steamship Round of Beef and Baked King Salmon. It is the perfect way to start our tour of Idaho.
We'll make our way to Wallace which is famous as the "Silver Capital of the World," and every building in town is listed in the U.S. National Historic Register. Enjoy the Sierra Silver Mine tour, the only tour of its kind in the Northwest. It offers a rare and exciting opportunity to personally experience the underground world of mining in the richest silver district on earth. On the short trip to and from the mine portal, a narrated tour is given of Historic Wallace. Hard hats are issued at the portal and an experienced miner is your guide as you walk through the main drift of the mine. Displays and exhibits are explained so people of all ages may safely observe equipment in operation and see modern and historical techniques used to mine silver, lead and zinc. There will also be some free time to explore this historic town. Next arrive at the Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg and enjoy a delicious lunch. Then, take a scenic Gondola Ride to the top of Silver Mountain on North Amercia's longest gondola - 3.1 mile journey from Kellogg to the Mountain House. Enjoy fresh mountain air and the scenic beauty of Idaho. Your next stop will be the Cataldo Mission. Father Ravalli, a Jesuit born in Italy, designed the building in the tradition of the grand cathedrals of his birthplace. Ravalli was a Renaissance man. He built the mission from sophisticated plans, using simple tools and untrained labor. The only tools Ravalli had were broad axe, auger, ropes and pulls, a pen, knife and an improvised whip saw.
Enjoy a thrilling half-day jet boat excursion through "Hells Canyon of the Snake River." This is one of the most famous sections of any river in America. Your jet boat tames the rapids as it passes through North America's deepest gorge and a place of unsurpassed beauty which is Hells Canyon. From the Snake River you will view a cathedral of God's own creation, with lofty walls and spires reaching heights of 9,393 feet, surpassing even the Grand Canyon! Enjoy lunch on the banks of the river, deep in the Snake River Canyon.
We'll travel through Idaho's Nez Perce Indian Reservation. Soon you will be travelling along the legendary Salmon River listening to stories of how the river got its nickname, "The River of No Return." Continue to McCall with a stop for lunch and touring the Smokejumpers Base. The McCall Smokejumper Base is one of only four Forest Service smokejumping training bases in the United States. The complex includes smokejumper training unit, paraloft, Payette National Forest dispatch office and the McCall air tanker base. After this amazing tour continue on past beautiful Cascade Lake and then travel east into the beautiful Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho. Enjoy a fun and educational stop at the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery where you will learn about the amazing story of the world's longest salmon run as Sockeye from the Pacific make their way up the Columbia River into the Snake River and then up the Salmon River finally arriving at Red Fish Lake after a 900 mile journey with a gain in elevation of 6,500 feet. Then arrive at Redfish Lake Lodge with some time to enjoy the scenery and walk along the lake before an included dinner at the lodge. After dinner, continue your scenic day of driving as you travel to Sun Valley for a two night stay right in the heart of Ketchum. Enjoy a half day tour of Sun Valley starting with the Sun Valley Museum of History. Located in the historic Forest Service Park, the museum buildings feature two exhibition spaces and a collections center. Under the library's direction, the 1933 buildings, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will showcase exhibits that detail the region's cultural heritage from the first inhabitants, to miners and ranchers, to destination skiers, to artists and athletes. You will also drive past and visit other historical sites including the Old Union Pacific Railroad Terminal, Horace Lewis Home, the Cemetery where Ernest Hemingway is buried, the Hemingway Memorial and more. The rest of the afternoon and evening are free to explore and enjoy as you would like.
After a leisurely morning, depart Sun Valley and travel west to Idaho's Capital city, Boise. Boise has long been dubbed the "City of Trees," a nickname that always catches newcomers by surprise given the city's high-desert climate and summers with little or no rain. Enjoy a little free time in the downtown area with it's wonderful shops and restaurants to explore and have lunch on your own. Then visit the St. Chapel Winery. You will take a tour and actually taste the finished product during a wine tasting with hors d'oeuvres. Great wine begins with great soil - and the fact is, only a handful of regions in the U.S. boast the quality soils required to produce the finest wines. Idaho is one of them. Few people realize that rich, volcanic soils have attracted grape growers for nearly 100 years. This afternoon, stop at the World Center Birds of Prey. Enjoy an intimate encounter with live birds of prey, including the Peregrine Falcon, California Condors, Aplomado Falcon, and much more. Your experience will include: Live Bird Demonstrations, Falconry Tours, Condor Cliffs California Condor Exhibit, Orange-Breasted Falcon Rainforest Exhibit, Interpretive Trail, Multimedia exhibits/movies, and a Unique gift shop. You'll simply be amazed. Did you know that Idaho is home to one of the largest populations of Basques outside of Spain? Numbers around 30,000 in southern Idaho and eastern Oregon are thrown around as estimates. They have been here about as long as western settlers have inhabited the region-since the mid to late 1800s-first coming for mining, then as shepherds. Enjoy touring of the Basque Museum, then join the group for a Basque farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Basque cuisine refers to the typical dishes and ingredients of the cuisine of the Basque people of Spain and France. What an unforgettable last day here in Idaho.
