Take a breath of fresh air in Illinois' largest Old Order Amish Settlement!

Illinois’ largest Old Order Amish Settlement

You’ll find a trip to the Arcola countryside to be more than a breath of fresh, country air. Farming styles are diverse: everything from the latest in farming technology for planting and harvesting to the horse-drawn machinery of Amish farmers. The rural area is home to many Amish farms, businesses and schools. You’ll enjoy the unique view of horse-drawn buggies, carts and farm equipment during our scenic drives with a local guide. Our local guide will teach us about the Amish lifestyles, traditions, and common practices.

Lifestyles of the Amish

The Amish came to Illinois in 1865 where they purchased farmland along the Kaskaskia River. Amish farms and businesses are an integral part of the social and economic fabric of the community. We’ll make a stop at a goat farm and meet Merle’s 35 LaMancha goats. After the tour you will sample some of the products that are made on the farm. Some of his products include feta cheese, yogurt and goats milk. After the tastings, Merle will hitch up the buggy and take you on a nice little buggy ride. We’ll make a stop at a local Amish buggy maker where you will take a tour of this buggy shop. This shop makes most of the Amish buggies used in the Arthur area. Learn about creating the undercarriage, the buggy chassis and body and the art of using fire for steel rimmed wheel making. There are always buggies in various stages of production to view. We’ll make a stop at Beachy’s Bulk Foods which carries a full line of spices, flours, nuts, dried fruits, candies and more. Lunch is included in an Amish home. Meals are served family style, on traditional benches and folding chairs right in the host’s living area. We’ll step back in time to an era where families put God first then family and last comes work. On an Amish home tour, life reflects this in simple things like painted plates or homemade bread cooling on the countertop. You will see how the ladies of the house wash and dry their clothes and more. Rockome Foods offers a variety of fresh deli meats and cheeses along with their homemade candies and baked goods. Rockome Foods also offers a variety of locally produced food products including jams, jellies and fruits.

Now that’s Entertainment!

Enjoy a live show at The Little Theatre on the Square. Past productions include Beauty and the Beast, The Buddy Holly Story and other quality shows.  At the time of publication, 2018 performaces were to be announced.

Reindeers!

A western style lunch is included at Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch before we take a tour and surround ourselves with these magical animals of the North. You’ll be given a treat to feed them and you may even have the opportunity to give them a ‘reindeer kiss’.  It’s a great photo opportunity. You’ll learn directly from the owners how they started with a small Christmas Tree Farm and two reindeer and great into a major tourist attraction!
