Plantation on Crystal River

The historic Plantation onCrystal River is a beautiful 50-year-old, 232 acre eco-friendly resort offering comfortable accommodations, a full service space and is surrounded by the natural springs of Kings Bay. The bay in Crystal River is one of the largest aquifers in the state and home to more than 400 West Indian manatees that migrate each year to the warmth of the springs.

Activities at the Plantation on Crystal River

Choose an activity and make a memory on this relaxed paced vacation.  The natural setting of the Plantation on Crystal River lends itself to activities you won’t find at other resorts.  Activities include a Manatee Swim, lawn games of horseshoes, Jenga, shuffle board or croquet, or challenge someone to a giant game of Checkers or Chess.  Grab a bean bag and start a game of corn-hole.  Maybe you would like to hang out by the Tiki Bar.  There is a Plantation Adventure Center to help you if you would like to go boating, fishing, or a nature-based experience off and onshore.  There is also a spa and an outdoor heated lagoon pool and hot tub available.  Or perhaps you will want to take in 27 holes of golf.

Crystal River, Florida - The only place in the world where you can swim with wild manatees!

Crystal River is known for being one of just a few places in Florida that native manatees flock to each year during the cold months. The town and its surrounding waters are dotted with natural springs that remain a balmy 72 degrees year-round, drawing in the manatees that can't survive in colder water.  One of the most famous places that the manatees gather in Crystal River is at Three Sisters Springs, a collection of three natural springs that feed the Crystal River. Swimming in the springs is amazing because the water is so clear.

Wild About Florida

We’ll stop at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. Originally opened as a kind of zoo in the early 1900’s, today the park is run by the state of Florida.  When the state took over the park a few decades ago, it slowly started whittling down the animals living there to ones that you'll find in Florida, keeping humane captivity in mind. Today, there are resident manatees, alligators, bald eagles, and even an orphaned Florida panther. One odd animal you'll still find here is Lu the hippo. Hippos are certainly not indigenous to Florida, but when the state took over the park the locals petitioned for Lu the hippo to be able to stay since he'd been a staple at the park for so long. The state ended up granting Lu honorary Florida citizenship so he could continue living at Homosassa Springs.  We’ll take a journey on Wild Bill’s Airboat Tours to see Florida’s exotic wildlife in the unspoiled natural paradise.  This thrilling ride will take us down the Withlacoochee River and through the swamps looking for the Florida Alligator!

Florida Fun

We’ll visit the Floral City Heritage Museum where you will learn about the history of the area through displays, exhibits and more.  No trip to Florida would be complete without a stop at a Citrus Stand.  We’ll be stopping at Ferris Groves Fruit Stand where they have over 80 years in Citrus!  Enjoy the views and stories on a Spirit of the Springs Pontoon Boat Tour through the famous ‘Blue Waters’ that are the headsprings of the Homosassa River.  You will learn about the springs hydrology and the residents that make this eco-system so precious!  You’ll enjoy a humorous tour of the Crystal River and surrounding area as it is today versus the quirky downtown Crystal River of the past.  You’ll hear information about some of the eccentric local artists and see the beauty and nature that is everywhere!  The Citrus County Historic Society celebrates when Elvis came to town in July of 1961 to film “Follow that Dream.”  For the 6 weeks, sleepy little Citrus County hosted actors, crew members, star-struck fans, and, of course, the King himself.  We tour the Old Courthouse Museum and then take a showing of “Follow that Dream” at the Valerie Theatre.  On our final night at the Crystal River Plantation we’ll enjoy a beautiful Kings Bay sunset cruise.  We’ll explore the bay and watch one of the best sunsets the Nature Coast has to offer!  Before leaving the state of Florida, we’ll stop in Gainesville at the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens which is comprised of 24 major collections visually accessible from a 1 ½ mile paved walkway. These include the state's largest public display of bamboos and the largest herb garden in the Southeast.
